a poem by Dorothy Parker

General Review of the Sex Situation

Woman wants monogamy;
Man delights in novelty.
Love is a woman's moon and sun;
Man has other forms of fun.
Woman lives but in her lord;
Count to ten, and a man is bored.
With this the gist and sum of it,
What earthly good can come of it?

Nobel Prize 2006

It's official, folks ! This year's Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk, who-according to the Commitee--"in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures".
He was born in Istanbul in 1952 and studied architecture and journalism in his hometown.
Some of his works include Beyaz Kale (The white castle, 1985), Yeni hayat (The new life, 1994 ) and Kar ( Snow, 2002 )...
Check out all the additional information and Nobel Prizes for other categories on http://nobelprize.org.

Terrorists and gutlessness (?)

In November there is supposed to be a premiere of the Mozart opera Idomeneo in the Deutsche Oper, Berlin. But maybe it will never take place. Why so? Because of terrorists.....and because of free artistic expression, which is exactly what director Neunfels makes use of in this production.
Now, I hear you ask : Why could a cute and harmless Mozart opera cause such a drama?
Well, maybe the topic ---the revolt of human beings against deities in all their forms---is not exactly after everyone's ( and less after fundametalist terrorist's ) taste.
Result : An anonymous phone call to the Federal Criminal Police Office...in a somewhat threatening tone, which in the end lead Kirsten Hams, the director of the Deutsche Oper, to cancel the whole thing.

Second part of the drama: In Spain, more than ever after the terrorist attacks on 11-M in Madrid, the law representatives are investigating national networks linked to Al Qaeda etc.
Since summer of this year, both attorney Olga Sánchez and inquisitor Juan del Olmo, who are leading the investigations, have been subject of death menaces arriving by post, "inviting" them to abandon their task. A case has been opended in order to clear up the incidents.

I just want to express my concern about it, because this new way of blackmailig might bring all of us to our knees. The "do what we say or we bomb you" way is hard to deal with. Hopefully everyone who has to confront this shows a relentless attitude, for if not there will soon be paramilitary uniforms and recitals of the sharia all over Europe....
